Reoccurring dreams4/21/2012 ![]() Do you remember when you were little and you used to have one particular reoccurring dream that plagued you all the way into your teenage years? I used to have the most bizarre dream. I've never heard of anyone else experiencing a dream quite like this. I was a heavy silver ball. There was no thought to me other than rolling forward. But I could feel what I rolled across. Intensely. My perspective would change, either I had the view from the ball itself, or I would observe the ball as it rolled. I do not know what propelled the ball forward. And it just rolled in a straight line, from one edge over to the other edge. Not fast or slow.
Now here is the part that is the winger... When I woke up, depending on which side I was on last, I would feel the same sensation all over my skin while awake. Meaning; if I woke up on the painful metal side, then my flannel pajamas would feel like barbed wire cutting into me. My skin would hurt, all over. It didn't matter if I touched a smooth tile, it would feel like cutting metal. The same would happen if I woke up on the smooth soft side, everything I touched would be the most pleasant, softest thing I ever touched, even if it was sandpaper. This would last about 20 minutes after I had awakened. I remember eating Captain Crunch on two different occasions with two separate sensations, one felt like I was chewing on metal shavings and screws, the other felt like the cereal had been sitting in milk for hours (which it hadn't) like it was marshmallows. These physical sensations had an almost buzzing feel to it. It was odd. And rarely, I could change the sensation in my body after I woken up. But sometimes I could, as long as the allotted time it took for the ball to roll across the surface. I would try my best to wake up on the soft side but I wasn't always successful. This dream occurred continually throughout my childhood. I do remember one time in my 20's waking up to it. But I haven't had the dream for a very long time now. I suppose it's easy to determine what the dream meant. But who knows if that is what it really meant. The part that still baffles me is the sensation on my skin after I woke up. I've never heard of anyone else going through something like that. And it was annoying, especially waking up on the painful side because it would take time to wear off. You can interpret your dream and I can interpret your dream, and we could both be right or wrong -- no one can know for sure. Dreams are about the dreamer, as are any symbols in them, so when looking at your dreams it is important to personalize your interpretations of them. And it is believed that the dream will reach a conclusion (and may even stop repeating) once the dreamer understands the message and resolves to make a change.
I wonder what it was I was supposed to do that my sub-conscience was trying to tell me to do. I must have done something to make it go away. Perhaps I just grew out of it. But I wonder if I still have that dream and I just haven't woken up to it. One of the most famous accounts of a recurrent dream is from Abraham Lincoln. While discussing the war with General Grant during a cabinet meeting he told the general that there would be big news from the war front. When Grant asked why he thought this he replied: "I had a dream last night; and ever since this war began I have had the same dream just before every event of great national importance. It portends some important event that will happen very soon." That evening Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. What are your recurrent dreams?
